"You Are My Rock"
My wife said to me, "You are my rock." If you follow your heart, you may be surprised where it takes you.
My grief journey has led me to a place I would not have expected. It started with walking around in a daze. Then a rock would catch my eye, and I would pick it up and put it in my pocket. I found myself with a tear-streaked face, putting my hand in my pocket and touching the rock.
I started getting a surplus of rocks and, not wanting to be a rock hoarder, I had an idea of finding rocks I could carve. I found some special rocks (only found in Michigan) that were far away from home. When the thought of going away from the comfort of home was scary, I drove the distance. I wanted to stop and turn around at every turn but kept going.
My heart led me to this place in the U.P., so the thought of carving hearts came to me. My will found its way, and I created a special heart, which I call "Kona Heart," the Pocket Heart.
I was surprised when this came full circle. A person on TikTok asked for one, and I surprised her by sending her one. She thanked me and told me it could not have come at a better time because two days prior, she had lost a family member. She ended her thank you with a "God Bless You."
Who would have thought picking up a random rock would lead to touching someone’s heart?
Thank you for reading my story. I hope it helps someone, which is my reason for sharing. Having faith and taking one step at a time will lead us to a special place in our hearts.

To see the look on the face of the veteran in the wheelchair was priceless and what art is all about.
Michigan's Polar Bears
In honor of all the Michigan Polar Bears, along with my grandfather Amiel DeBusschere (SN: 2033648) from Army Engineer, Regiment 310th Company B, I dedicate this Military Themed Guitar.
5,000 young Michigan soldiers, known as the "Polar Bears," trained at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Michigan, for the Polar Bear Expedition. They were then sent about 600 miles north of Moscow. Their main objective was guarding an accumulation of military supplies. They also faced the 1918-19 Pandemic, which reached the most remote part of Northern Russia. About one hundred American soldiers died as a result.
The Polar Bears made history over one hundred years ago as the first U.S. soldiers to fight the Russians in battle during WWI.
We will never forget their service.
My guitar placed 2nd in the Local Competition and is now heading to the National Competition.

In honor of my carving friend, Louis Lehman. Louis was carving this Mallard drake for Fr. Brian Hurley and was halfway through the carving when he sadly passed away. I was able to finish the carving in Louis's style and present it to Fr. Brian. It was truly an honor for me.
Louis was like a mentor to me, someone to talk to about my carvings. His advice to me was, "Before you judge someone's art, try it yourself first and keep that first one. Then you would judge a lot differently." He also taught me to share what I do because you never know who you are inspiring. He told me that I inspired him to start carving again.
Being Inspired to Grow into My Art!
Wow, this guitar was so much fun to do!
It is amazing to experience the effect my carvings have on other people. Like this carved guitar I made for a friend. Seeing their reaction and knowing that my art can bring joy and meaning to someone's life is truly rewarding. Art has a unique way of connecting us and conveying emotions that words sometimes can't express. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my work and touch the lives of others.
